Fraunces
Fraunces is a serif font with a broad nine-weight range, from 100 through 900, and both normal and italic styles. Its flexible setup can support everything from restrained text to more emphatic display work, while the variable format allows finer adjustment between available weights. The supplied subsets are Latin, Latin Extended, and Vietnamese.
Best suited for: Use Fraunces for editorial headings, feature titles, brand materials, invitations, packaging, and short passages that benefit from a serif structure. Lighter weights can keep secondary text gentle, while heavier settings can give names, headlines, and callouts more visual authority. Italics are useful for emphasis, captions, and selected supporting lines.
Design considerations: The wide weight range makes hierarchy easy to build within one family: reserve the heaviest styles for compact, high-impact text and use regular or lighter weights where reading comfort matters. Normal and italic versions can distinguish emphasis without changing families. Test smaller sizes and dense paragraphs carefully, especially when moving between very light and very bold settings.
Pairing guidance: For contrast, pair Fraunces with a restrained sans serif for navigation, labels, captions, or interface text. A simpler serif can also work when you want a quieter companion, provided its proportions and texture differ enough. Keep the supporting type less decorative so Fraunces remains clear in headings and featured text.
