About this font

M PLUS 1 is a sans-serif family with a broad nine-weight range, from 100 Thin through 900 Black. Its single normal style keeps the system focused, while variable-font support can allow more gradual weight adjustments where supported. The supplied subsets are Japanese, Latin, Latin Extended, and Vietnamese.

Best suited for: Use M PLUS 1 for interfaces, navigation, forms, dashboards, and other text-led layouts that need several levels of emphasis. Its range can also cover headings, labels, captions, and body copy within one family. Test longer passages at the intended size to confirm the reading texture fits your layout.

Design considerations: The lighter weights can create an airy appearance in large display text, while 400 and nearby weights offer a useful starting point for everyday copy. Medium and bold weights help separate labels, subheads, and actions; the heaviest settings are better reserved for prominent short text. Because only the normal style is listed, hierarchy should come mainly from weight, size, spacing, and layout.

Pairing guidance: A restrained serif can add contrast to headings or editorial passages without competing with the family’s clean sans-serif structure. For a quieter system, pair it with another sans-serif that has a different width or a more humanist drawing. Keep the companion family limited to a clear role, and compare proportions at the actual sizes used.
